2026 Excellence in Education

Celebrating the 2026 Honorees in the top 5% of
Lebanon County High School Students and Their Mentors

A Message from the Chamber President

For the past 35 years, the Lebanon Valley Chamber of Commerce has honored the top 5% of all graduating seniors from Lebanon County public and private schools. Each student chooses a mentor who has made an impact on their academic career. On May 5, parents, students, mentors, and administrators came out to the Cedar Crest High School stadium for a beautiful evening of recognition and celebration. This supplemental publication is a piece of history for them to treasure for years.

Students, you have worked hard and had challenges unique to each of you. You’ve overcome so much and shone brighter for it. I congratulate you and wish you the greatest success as you move on from high school. The Lebanon Valley Chamber is here to help you achieve your career goals by connecting you with Lebanon Valley businesses ready to start your career journey. If you choose to establish your career elsewhere, joining a Chamber of Commerce is a great way to connect to your business community to help reach your goals and combine forces for your community’s greater good.

Karen Groh, President/CEO

A History of Excellence in Education
Since 1990, the Lebanon Valley Chamber of Commerce has organized an event to recognize the top five percent of graduating seniors from each Lebanon County high school. Students from nine high schools are invited, the seven public schools (Annville-Cleona, Cedar Crest, ELCO, Lebanon, Lebanon County Career & Technology Center, Northern Lebanon, Palmyra Area); and private schools including New Covenant Christian School and Our Lady of the Cross. Each student honored is allowed to bring a mentor who has made an impact on his or her education. Students usually choose a high-school teacher, although occasionally a guidance counselor, coach, or an elementary teacher is selected.

The idea and implementation of the event were instituted by past Chamber president, Stephan Vegoe when he began at the chamber in 1987. Stephan brought the idea of an education committee to the Lebanon Valley Chamber from his previous position at the Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce in Wisconsin. With the cooperation of Lebanon Valley administrators from various local school districts, Stephan began to develop the Excellence in Education Banquet. The event was supported by Irene Van Tassel, a guidance counselor for the Palmyra Area School District, and Karen Light, who held various education-related positions but ultimately became the principal at Union Canal Elementary School. Thirty-three years later, the event is still going strong.

✔️ Mentor: Mr. Mark Dimick

Mr. Dimick is truly one of those people that inspires awe and fully captivates each and every one of his students. From the fascinating curriculum he pursues within the classroom, to the insightful initiatives for discourse among peers, the educational atmosphere he provides is one that transcends most. Outside of his objective educational prowess, I have come to know Mr. Dimick as someone who goes above and beyond to make sure his students really understand perspectives both historically and in the present day. His commitment to the hyper analysis of everyday speech has benefitted me in ways that I will use for the rest of my life.

✔️ Mentor: Mr. Matthew Gross

I have chosen Mr. Gross, my guidance counselor, to be my mentor honored tonight because of his impact on the future of my postsecondary education. Countless times, I have sat in his office discussing my complicated schedule and college application strategies. He has done an outstanding job supporting me and lifting me through the weight of upperclassman stress. Without his help, I would not have the opportunity to attend Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. Boston has always been my dream location for college, and I owe him many thanks for his support to get me there.

⭐Key to Success: Stay true to your dreams

🏆 Student: Anna Lim

✔️ Mentor: Mr. Matthew Gross

I chose my guidance counselor, Mr. Gross, as my mentor because he was the bridge between my health challenges and my academic goals. Managing personal health issues while maintaining high academic standards often felt impossible, but his unyielding support made it manageable. From navigating complex scheduling to providing wisdom when I was sick, he ensured my health never dictated my potential. He helped me find the vital balance I needed to succeed rather than just survive. Because of his advocacy, I realized that my goals were still reachable despite the obstacles in my way

⭐Key to Success: Believe in yourself, no matter what.

➡️ Student Sponsor: Annville-Cleona School District

🏆 Student: George Maag

✔️ Mentor: Mr. Jeremy Fortna

I chose Mr. Fortna because he helped me understand that math is so much more than just numbers. By the time I got to his class, I already knew that I wanted to pursue a STEM field after high school, but my view of math was very narrow. He integrated higher-level math concepts into our Calc BC class, and it helped me to realize that math is so much more complex than I had ever realized. He helped expand my mathematical knowledge and made me more curious than I was before his class

Mr. Enders, known to us as Señor, is an exemplar of lifelong, joyful learning. Every day in class, his incredible positivity as well as his love for teaching, learning, and especially for his students shines through in all that he does, and he still makes a point to learn something new every day despite having already been a teacher for decades. Now, Señor is not only my Spanish teacher, but a lifelong role model for me and all AC students.

She has assigned many group projects and presentations that have helped me become more comfortable with public speaking and making friends. Mme Weber cares about each of her students individually, and pushes them past their perceived limits, which is why I have truly benefited from having her as a teacher.

✔️ Mentor:  Mr. Waldemar Plichta

I had Señor Plichta for two years of Spanish. Mr. Plichta had a very engaging teaching style and his jokes and goofy pronunciations always put smiles on our faces. He always took time to talk with me about soccer, other coursework, my future aspirations, or other languages, especially when I was a junior in a class of all seniors. He always had words of encouragement and profound advice for me when I needed it. Mr. Plichta is not only an amazing teacher but a great mentor who always wants to see his students succeed in life.

She encouraged me to get more involved little by little so I learned to branch out. Because of her, I found what I was truly passionate about in high school and my future career. She believed I could be anything I wanted, so her nickname for me has been Miss President. Now, her Miss President isn’t afraid of putting herself out there for her new and exciting future.

He’s got the ability to adapt his frequency to communicate the most complicated, brain-numbing topics into something digestible for any minds listening. He’s really a local to the ear. As an individual, he cares like an elephant. Away from his classes, he’s the head of many brainiac completions ensuring the growth of bright souls. During my sophomore year summer, I went on a trip to Europe with some students from my German class and another group from Kentucky. Mrs. Marini made the trip extremely enjoyable and left a life long impression of where someone’s values should be. ✔️ Mentor:  Mr. Michael Wise

Mr. Wise was my honors Biology teacher for my freshman year and he was the first teacher that trusted my capability for passing his honors biology class. On the first week of freshman year, I remembered when Mr. Wise gave the whole class a textbook to take home, handed out a vocabulary worksheet for a quiz, gave us our first essay that was due in a week, and our first set of notes. Moreover, I gave Mr. Wise a paper to drop his class even though he signed it, he still called my counselor and told her to not let me drop his class. This showed me that even though I did not believe in myself Mr. Wise believed in me.
