Celebrating the 2024 Honorees in the top 5% of
Lebanon County High School Students and Their Mentors

A Message from the Chamber President

Each year for the past 33 years, the Lebanon Valley Chamber of Commerce has honored the top 5% of all graduating seniors in Lebanon County public and private schools. Each student chooses a mentor that has made an impact on their academic career. On May 8, parents, students, mentors, and administrators came out to the Cedar Crest High School stadium for a beautiful evening of recognition and celebration. This supplemental publication is a piece of history for them to treasure for years.

Students, you have worked hard and had challenges unique to each of you. You’ve overcome so much and shined brighter for it. I congratulate you and wish you the greatest success as you move on from high school. The Lebanon Valley Chamber is here to help you achieve your career goals by connecting you with Lebanon Valley businesses ready to start your career journey. If you choose to establish your career elsewhere, joining a Chamber of Commerce is a great way to connect to your business community to help reach your goals and combine forces for your community’s greater good.

We are grateful for the support of each school which helped coordinate and gather all the information included in this publication.

Karen Groh, President/CEO

A History of Excellence in Education

Since 1990, the Lebanon Valley Chamber of Commerce has organized an event to recognize the top five percent of graduating seniors from each Lebanon County high school. Students from nine high schools are invited, the seven public schools (Annville-Cleona, Cedar Crest, ELCO, Lebanon, Lebanon County Career & Technology Center, Northern Lebanon, Palmyra Area); and private schools including New Covenant Christian School and Our Lady of the Cross. Each student honored is allowed to bring a mentor who has made an impact on his or her education. Students usually choose a high-school teacher, although occasionally a guidance counselor, coach, or an elementary teacher is selected.

The idea and implementation of the event were instituted by past Chamber president, Stephan Vegoe when he began at the chamber in 1987. Stephan brought the idea of an education committee to the Lebanon Valley Chamber from his previous position at the Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce in Wisconsin. With the cooperation of Lebanon Valley administrators from various local school districts, Stephan began to develop the Excellence in Education Banquet. The event was supported by Irene Van Tassel, a guidance counselor for the Palmyra Area School District, and Karen Light, who held various education-related positions but ultimately became the principal at Union Canal Elementary School. Thirty-three years later, the event is still going strong.

✔️ Mentor: Mrs. Sarah Cranney

I’ve chosen Mrs. Cranney because of her continuous hard work improving music education at Annville-Cleona. When I joined chorus my junior year, I was immediately moved by the power of song in Cranney’s room. Getting to be apart of a choir conducted by Cranney has given me an experience that will stay with me long after high school. Also, she never hesitates to help a student. Whether it be for a PMEA audition or concert, Cranney’s one-on-one mentorship has been just as valuable as her classroom instruction. Thank you, Mrs. Cranney, for your hard work and dedication to Annville-Cleona.
